Fly an A340-600 simulator with us, led by a Lufthansa Captain and Instructor, and get to know Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT), the Lufthansa pilot and cabin crew training facility with an incredible array of sims, cabin mockups and much more. What goes into training a Lufthansa pilot? And can we as non-licensed fans of the A340 actually manage to fly and land it?
Although LAT has simulators for just about every aircraft type, today we are all-in on the A340-600 simulator. This is an extra interesting sim because it can be quickly converted between A330 and A340 by switching out key panels and components, depending on the training needs of the day. And we are joined by Claus Harder, Lufthansa A340/A330 Captain and LAT Instructor, who you may know from Instagram as Quax747. Claus is here to give us the detailed tour of the cockpit controls and buttons, and then show us a bit about how to fly this thing.
Gabe and Sophia both get to have a go at manually flying the traffic pattern at Frankfurt, landing Runway 25C. And we try out some low visibility approaches plus a rejected takeoff (RTO) and discussion around extinguishing an engine fire and the decision process that would lead up to an evacuation. This is a fascinating insider look at the controls, systems and flight profile of the A340-600, including insights into some of its particularities and what sets it apart from other aircraft.
