Exploring Antarctica on the Basler (upgraded DC-3!)

Welcome back to Antarctica where we’re flying around with White Desert. This video is # 2 in the series and this time we’re boarding the Basler BT-67, an upgraded DC-3 with turboprop engines, new avionics and more – all with that classic tail-dragger airframe (83 years old!) still in its full glory.

We’ve got the passenger perspective as well as a jumpseat ride in the cockpit to get the full Basler experience, and we also chat to the incredible 19-year old pilot flying about what it’s like to fly this aircraft in such a unique place. Stay tuned for the end too where we have a chat with the founders of Enterprise Air, the Canadian outfit that operates the aircraft. It’s a rugged beast of an airplane that can handle just about anything you throw at it, and this one’s outfitted with skis. And we’re flying two legs on this beauty, first a quick one from the passenger perspective routing Wolf’s Fang to Whichaway Camp, about a half hour away, and next in the cockpit in the other direction.

Our crazy planespotting mission in Tokyo

3 hours (transatlantic!) in the Dash 8 cockpit

We’re going transatlantic on the workhorse Dash 8-200 with Air Greenland – flying from the brand new Nuuk International Airport in Greenland to Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport in Iceland (KEF). And we’re sitting in the jumpseat which means we have 3 hours on this very-long-haul-for-a-turboprop over the ice cap and remote east Greenland plus the Atlantic Ocean.

Flying the A340 from Antarctica to Africa!

It’s time to leave Antarctica and head home after 8 incredible days on the 7th continent with White Desert. That means we’re greeting the inbound A340-300 (operated by Hi-Fly) as it lands at Wolf’s Fang Runway on a beautiful bluebird day with almost no wind. Then it’s time to climb onboard and make the 5.5 hour trek back to South Africa.
