Monitoring the Aviation Impacts of Hurricane Florence

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Hurricane Florence will be an ‘extremely dangerous major hurricane when it nears the U.S. coast’ sometime Friday. Airports in the areas expected to be hit hardest by the hurricane have already begun to cancel flights beginning late Wednesday and on Tuesday, Boeing moved any flyable 787 from its production facility in South Carolina to Washington. Flightradar24 Coverage in the Wake of Hurricane Irma

As Hurricane Irma moves through the Caribbean Sea, impacting the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, we watched flights in the area, including NOAA Hurricane Hunters NOAA42 and NOAA49 and Delta Air Lines’ rescue flight from Puerto Rico, with great interest. But none of the flights on our site are visible without the constant stream of data from volunteers who host our ADS-B receivers or have built their own and share data with our network. (more…)

Delta Goes Big, Then Goes Home

In the face of a category 5 hurricane, Delta Air Lines meteorologists, dispatchers, pilots, cabin crew, and ground crew accomplished an incredible feat on Wednesday. As Hurricane Irma bore down San Juan, Puerto Rico, Delta sent one last flight to help evacuate a few hundred people from San Juan just before the airport closed.
