Meridian An-12BK crashes near Kavala, Greece

A Meridian An-12BK en route from Niš, Serbia to Amman, Jordan crashed 16 July west of Kavala, Greece about 19:47 UTC. Flight MEM3032 departed Niš at 18:36 UTC and was crossing the Aegean Sea when it turned back toward Greece at 19:29 UTC.

The aircraft descended and may have been attempting to land at an airfield near Kavala, when the last ADS-B signal was received at 19:47. Eyewitness accounts and video appear to show fire prior to it impacting the ground.

Flight MEM3032 was operated by an Antonov An-12BK, a four engine turboprop cargo aircraft. UR-CIC (MSN 01347701) first flew in 1971. It subsequently flew for multiple airlines before being acquired by Meridian in early 2022.

Granular ADS-B data

We processed granular ADS-B data regarding MEM3032 after receiving news of the crash. At about 19:40, while crossing the coast of Greece, the ground speed of the aircraft begins to fluctuate and the vertical rate reported by the aircraft’s transponder begins to increase. The greatest vertical rate recorded was -5,780 feet per minute at 525 feet AMSL.
