Power failure disrupts operations at key European airports

A widespread power failure is negatively impacting operations at numerous airports across Spain, Portugal and the South of France.

Air traffic in Spain and Portugal is being impacted by widespread electrical outages affecting both countries. We’re not yet seeing widespread cancellations, but we are monitoring the situation as it develops.

Whilst some Flightradar24 ADS-B receivers are offline, we are managing to maintain coverage in Spain and Portugal.

An update published by Eurocontrol indicates a reduced rate of arriving aircraft are to be accepted in Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCN) through the rest of the day. Lisbon Airport (LIS) is to temporarily halt arrivals before resuming at a reduced rate.

Lisbon Airport (LIS) appears to be experiencing the most significant disruption so far. As of 13:45UTC, we have logged 32 canceled flights set to arrive at the airport on Monday, April 28. We have also tracked 4 diversions.

Update on cancellations at the most effected airports.

Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona have seen the highest number of flight cancellations. On a national level, Portugal has seen a total of 113 cancellations, and Spain has seen a total of 81 cancellations.

Here’s a look at the trend in the number of take-offs per hour we saw on Flightradar24 (in local time) at Lisbon Airport.

  • 09:00-10:00 – 20 flights
  • 10:00-11:00- 19 flights
  • 11:00-12:00 – 16 flights
  • 12:00-13:00 – 7 flights
  • 13:00-14:00 – 2 flights
  • 14:00-15:00 – 9 flights
  • 15:00-16:00 – 8 flights

Eurocontrol have released updated delay stats for Spain, as shown below. According to the organisation, flights in LECM and LECB en-route sectors are reduced by 20%.”
