Air India Boeing 787-8 crashes on takeoff in Ahmedabad

We are following reports of an accident involving an Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, India. Flight AI171 was a scheduled flight from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London Gatwick Airport (LGW). It was operated by VT-ANB, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner built in December 2013.

One survivor confirmed to be found amongst the wreckage

Numerous media sources (including the Hidustani Times and the Guardian) have conformed a single survivor from the incident. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British passport holder, told the Hindustani Times: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.”

The full length of Runway 23 at Ahmedabad was used

We are continuing to process data from receiver sources individually. Additional processing confirms #AI171 departed using the full length of Runway 23 at Ahmedabad. RWY 23 is 11,499 feet long. The aircraft backtracked to the end of the runway before beginning its take off roll.

The aircraft involved was Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as VT-ANB. The aircraft is 11 years old and was delivered to Air India in February 2014. The aircraft had operated a domestic flight AI423 from Delhi (DEL) to Ahmedabad (AMD) earlier in the morning.

Air India operate a fleet of 27 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. The crash of AI171 marks the first hull loss (total destruction) of a Boeing 787.
