We’ve installed receivers in remote locations like Antarctica, Bear Island in the Barents Sea, and St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean, but even we were a bit surprised when we received an application from Pripyat, Ukraine. Pripyat, now a ghost town, was the city built to support the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

We were even more surprised when we received photos of the receiver’s intended location. Located approximately 1.5 kilometers from the nuclear plant, the receiver is now hosted on the roof of a large warehouse. The receiver is being hosted by a contractor working on the New Safe Confinement project.

This receiver is already helping increase coverage in the area and we’re looking forward to an increase in MLAT coverage in the area. We’re especially excited to have lower level MLAT coverage of the Antonov An-22, An-124, and An-225 based out of Gostomel Airport.

Background

Pripyat was evacuated in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster, with residents bringing few belongings. The town to this day remains mainly as it was in 1986.
