Flightradar24 Announces Cooperation with Aerial Maritime Ltd for Space-based ADS-B Flight Tracking

We are excited to announce our cooperation agreement with Aerial & Maritime, Ltd, a GomSpace subsidiary, as we move forward with development of space-based ADS-B flight tracking. With this cooperation agreement we will design and develop a joint flight data service based on FR24’s global terrestrial ADS-B network and extensive expertise and A&M’s space based infrastructure.

Launching in Q2 2018, in time to meet ICAO’s 15-minute mandate, the nanosatellite-based service will initially offer ADS-B and AIS coverage in a region spanning from 37 Degrees Northern through 37 Degrees Southern Latitude. The joint flight data services under development will enhance Flightradar24 data sets already available to the professional aviation and air traffic management industry. Also as part of this cooperation with GomSpace and Aerial & Maritime, we aim to enhance our publicly available data with space-based ADS-B data via Flightradar24 web and mobile apps.

We have twice successfully tested space-based ADS-B reception and integration into the Flightradar24 network, a first for any commercial flight tracking service. Our previous tests with GomSpace’s GOMX-3 nanosatellite provided excellent flight and operational data, allowing us to move forward on a larger scale.

This joint flight data service will enhance our existing coverage and provide new coverage over three oceans, Africa, and the Amazon. The airspace awareness services will be beneficial to airlines and other aircraft operators as well as air traffic control and civil aviation authorities as they will be able to monitor remote oceanic airspace where most aircraft are currently not detected by other airspace monitoring systems.
