How installing an ADS-B receiver improved flight tracking at these airports

We’re continuously working to enhance flight tracking coverage. The installation of new Flightradar24 ADS-B receivers in key locations at airports around the world is a vital aspect of doing so. A well-placed receiver can not only increase the number of aircraft you see in the local area, but also enable you to more thoroughly track an aircraft’s journey on the ground, especially from the runway to the gate. A new receiver coming online can significantly boost the total overall number of flights tracked, providing better data for individuals and business users alike. Let’s take a look at some recent examples of new ADS-B receiver installations, and the positive effect they have had on flight tracking in the area.

Akron Canton Airport (CAK)

Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is a regional airport located in the city of Green, in southern Summit County, Ohio. We activated our receiver at the airport on August 12, 2024.

Move the slider left and right to see flight tracking positions logged before (yellow) and after (blue) receiver installation.

Prior to installing the receiver, we tracked 312,274,257 aircraft positions in the Akron area over a three-day period. Following the installation, this number increased to 484,379,150 positions – an increase of over 55%. This not only allows us to capture more data from local and overflying traffic, but also provides more accurate ground tracking, meaning users can now follow aircraft movements between the gate and the runway. Quite simply, you get greater precision in tracking the aircraft’s full journey before takeoff and after landing at Akron.

Bartow Executive Airport (BOW)

Bartow Executive Airport (BOW) is located 4 miles northeast of Bartow in Polk County, Florida. Our receiver here was activated on June 11, 2024.

The newly installed ADS-B receiver at Bartow enabled us to track 79,938 positions over a three-day period, compared to 69,435 positions before the installation. That’s an increase of 15%. In this example we saw a specific improvement of flight tracking in the local area to the south and west of the airport, as well as increased ground coverage.

Belize City Airport (TZA)

Belize City Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport (TZA) serves Belize City, the largest in the country. The coastal airport sits at an elevation of just 5 meters above sea level, making ground coverage in this area even more essential. Our installation here has had one of the most notable impacts on local flight tracking.

Our receiver at Belize City came online on September 17, 2024. We tracked 7,143 positions in a three-day period following the installation. In a comparable period before installation, we tracked just 998 positions – a whopping increase of 615%.

How Flightradar24 ADS-B receivers work

Flightradar24 ADS-B receivers capture signals broadcast by aircraft equipped with ADS-B transponders, which provide real-time data such as position, altitude, and speed. These signals are sent to Flightradar24’s network, processed, and displayed on our platform. By installing receivers in strategic locations, particularly near airports, we can offer more comprehensive and detailed coverage for users around the world. Interested in learning more?
