1782 days after stopping service, Singapore Airlines is relaunching the world’s longest flights today as it brings back SQ21/SQ22 service between Singapore and New York (EWR). With a Great circle distance of 15,336 km, it is almost 1,000 km further than the current longest flight between Auckland and Doha operated by Qatar Airways. The return service from New York to Singapore is also the longest flight by time, with a block time of 18 hours 45 minutes.

Singapore Airlines will introduce the Airbus A350-900ULR (ultra long-range) into commercial service to operate the route. The airline has seven A350ULRs on order and will use the aircraft on the Singapore-New York (EWR) route as well as a relaunch of its Singapore-Los Angeles service. So far, Singapore is the only carrier to order the ULR variant from Airbus. Passengers won’t be able to tell the difference by looking at the aircraft, but the A350ULR is modified for increased gross weight and the ability to hold additional fuel through modifications to the existing fuel system enabling the addition of 24,000 litres of fuel.

Singapore Airlines last operated between Singapore and New York (EWR) in 2013. That service used Airbus A340-500 aircraft in an all-business class configuration.

Due to the operating economics of the A340-500, Singapore Airlines discontinued the flight effective 24 November 2013. In October 2015, the airline announced its selection of the A350ULR for its ultra-long range flights, signalling its intention to restart the route. The A350ULR is outfitted with 67 business class seats and 94 premium economy seats.
