   Excuse my ignorance, but why is that? Russia passing a law to suit itself doesn’t mean the lawful owner ceases to be the lawful owner – is it not possible to simply impound a stolen aircraft if it ever sets wing outside the country?

9. In my opinion, the reason of registered location is just for paying less taxes. Not for maintenance reason. Even for a leased aircraft you, as the AOC holder, is responsible for the maintenance and this could be done at every approved Part 145 location. They will not fly there jets to Bermuda for maintenance action

11. Interesting. Presumably (I) as sanctions means that spare parts etc cannot be provided for Boeing/Airbus airframes, the aircraft will simply become unusable at some stage (or be impounded as stolen aircraft should they leave Russia);and (ii) the rightful owners can be compensated from frozen Russian assets in the US and Europe? 12. Once the history of an aircraft and its maintenance and parts installed become uncertain or unclear the aircraft is basically a complete loss as far as being able to be legally flown/registered anywhere else. At least not without, I’d assume, being able to prove its got 100% legit parts and all maintenance was performed. They become worthless. Theres also the question of, if they’ll steal aircraft in bulk…are they beyond pulling some sketchy stuff with maintenance?

13. the consequence of this procedure may be, that never ever a non-russian lessor is going to lease a plane to an airline flying to or based in russia. Russia seems to act on short-terms.

16. It means that the owners suffer total losses of their equity just the same as the people of Ukraine have lost their houses, businesses and other property. The only difference is that the plane owners have a slim chance of getting their property back if the planes ever land outside Russia!

20. So the jets that were formerly registered in the Bahamas, leased through Chinese leasing companies (large banks, evidently) are now being “switched” over to some Russian registry? So who is paying who when this is happening? For example, are the monthly leasing payments to the finance company still being made? Or is the lender sh*t out of luck, as the saying goes?

22. I started flying as a passenger at age 8, I began flying planes at age 15, joined the USAF at age 17, Had 37 hrs in an F4 G simulator, I was on the list to be an Astronaut until I received the swine flu shot , my avaition career was over, I was diagnosed with GBS after the injection. 24. New mode-S codes according to planespotters.net.
    Agree with Philip, Federal Air Transport Agency (aka Rosaviatsiya) assumed airworthiness responsibility, but neither refused returning nor nationalized the aircraft (first thought when I saw a lot of RA-* registrations on fr24). I agree it smells, and canceling leases now will make an uncomfortable situation, but let’s see how it evolves.

25. @PHILIP DAVIES – because flying without certification and performing maintenance not approved by the manufacturer, potentially involving alternative parts means that the ability to bring the planes back to compliance upon recovery gets harder fast and the cost goes up fast hence the value drops fast. Essentially within a few weeks, nothing of the original manufacturers guarantee can be assured and they become an insurance nightmare.

29. Stealing other peoples property has never been accepted, even when a countries laws have been manipulated & bent to seemingly suggest that the involved process was legal. We all know this is theft by a crazed megalomaniac leader called Putin.
    It will result in years of distrust by other nations meaning that Russia will find spares hard to find and other business links will be irrevocably damaged for the Russian businesses.

30. Russia passing a law doesn’t authorize the theft of foreign owned aircraft and voiding legal leases. All preexisting legal obligations remain enforceable. What if any practical effect does re-registering an aircraft have and why would we care?

32. Interesting.
    On one hand the lessors were robbed of all those planes, worth about $10bn.
    On the other hand – the lessor has unilaterally cancelled a signed deal.
    Both sides could claim financial losses.
    As odd as it is – the lessors moved first with an aggressive act originating in a politically motivated sanction, so Russia could have a valid point in this dispute.

34. RA-73062 is attributed to VQ-BLT and VQ-BPR at the same time. Also RA-73264 to EI-FCH and EI-GIH; RA-73148 to VQ-BIL and VP-BIL.

36. It’s a great shame in this day and age that the manufacturers cannot disable these aircraft via software. Most airframes are so heavily computerised nowadays surely this feature could be integrated. It can happen with farm machinery!

37. Gradually these aircraft will be grounded for lack of spares. Grounded aircraft will then become providers of spares for the reducing population that remain in use. Those stranded overseas could presumably be repossessed by the lessors but the operational fleets will be restricted to use within the territory of Russia and adjoining sympathetic countries. If they land anywhere outside that perimeter they will either be refused entry or impounded.
