Korean Air flight 631 suffers runway overrun in Cebu

Korean Air flight 631 overran the runway at Cebu Mactan International Airport during landing on Sunday, 23 October. The aircraft, an A330-300, came to rest approximately 300 meters beyond the runway. None of the 162 passengers and 11 crew members sustained serious injuries.

Korean Air 631 departed Seoul at 19:20 local time (10:20 UTC) and flew south toward Cebu. At about 14:12 UTC KE631 was on final approach to Runway 22 and executed a go around, immediately attempting to land again at 14:26 UTC. After a second go around, KE631 held northeast of the airfield for approximately 30 minutes before conducting a third approach. The third approach resulted in a successful touchdown at 15:08 UTC, however, the aircraft was unable to stop on the runway.

The A330 continued past the end of the runway, striking an instrument landing system lighting array and coming to rest 300 meters beyond the runway. The last received ADS-B message from the aircraft at 15:08:29 UTC indicates a ground speed of 90 knots with 438 m of runway remaining.

KE631 aircraft details

Flight 631 was operated by an Airbus A330-300 registered HL7525. The aircraft (MSN 0219) was delivered new to Korean Air in 1998. Before today’s accident, Korean Air had 22 A330-300s in its fleet.

Weather at the time of the accident

Weather at the airfield had been poor for a few hours prior to KE631’s attempts to land. The METAR valid for the the period in which KE631 landed and went off the runway indicated thunderstorms and low clouds.

The METARs for the hours before and after 15:00 UTC also indicated thunderstorm activity.
