Endeavor Air CRJ-900 flips during landing in Toronto

Delta Air Lines flight 4819 suffered an accident upon landing in Toronto (YYZ | CYYZ) on 17 February. The flight from Minneapolis (MSP | KMSP) to Toronto was being operated by an Endeavor Air CRJ-900 registered N932XJ. The aircraft came to rest upside down with the right wing and vertical stabilizer detached from the fuselage. Initial reports indicate that there have been no fatalities among the 80 people on board and all passengers and crew are accounted for. The extent of any injuries is not yet known.

DL4819 departed Minneapolis at 11:47 am local time and touched down in Toronto at 14:13 local time after a flight of 1 hour, 26 minutes. The aircraft touched down on Runway 23. Based on the position of the emergency vehicle response to the accident, the aircraft came to rest near the intersection of Runway 23 and Runway 15.

Weather information

The active METAR at the time indicated a gusting crosswind and blowing snow. Winds were out of the west at 270° at 28 knots, gusting to 35 knots. Visibility was 6 miles with a runway visual range of 3000-6000 feet with an improving trend.

Aircraft information

DL4819 was operated by a CRJ-900LR registered N932XJ. The 15 year old aircraft was operated by Endeavor Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines operating as Delta Connection. 

Investigative updates

18 February 2025

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada confirmed today that the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered for analysis.

The TSB released their preliminary report on the accident, providing a thorough history of the flight, weather conditions, evacuation mechanics, and areas for further analysis as the investigation continues.

The report details the final approach sequence from approximately 500 feet above ground level to contact with the runway, including this sequence in the final 1.6 seconds before touchdown.

At 1412:42 (1.6 seconds before touchdown), the aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 136 knots, and its ground speed was 111 knots. The aircraft was slightly below the glide slope, but on the visual segment of the approach and tracking the runway centreline. The rate of descent had increased to 1072 fpm, and the bank angle was 5.9° to the right.

Less than 1 second before touchdown, the aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 134 knots, and its ground speed was 111 knots. The bank angle was 7.1° to the right, and the pitch attitude was 1° nose up. The rate of descent was recorded as 1110 fpm.

At 1412:43.6, the right main landing gear (MLG) contacted the runway. The aircraft was in a 7.5° bank to the right with 1° of nose-up pitch and 3g vertical acceleration, at a rate of descent of approximately 1098 fpm (18.3 fps).

As the aircraft touched down, “the side-stay that is attached to the right MLG fractured, the landing gear folded into the retracted position, the wing root fractured between the fuselage and the landing gear, and the wing detached from the fuselage, releasing a cloud of jet fuel, which caught fire.” The TSB says the precise sequence of these events is not yet known.

The preliminary report goes on to detail the evacuation of the aircraft, a process that was hampered by the aircraft coming to rest upside down and fuel pouring out near one of the emergency exits.
