A DHL Aero Expreso 757 broke in two after exiting the runway area while making an emergency return to San Jose, Costa Rica. The aircraft landed on runway Runway 07 and rolled 2,000 meters down the runway before veering right, exiting the runway, and spinning 180 degrees, coming to rest on a service road embankment. The Boeing 757 broke in two pieces, just after the wing area as a result of the impact with the embankment. The two crew members onboard were not seriously injured.
Air traffic control audio indicates the pilots chose to return to San Jose due to an issue with one of the aircraft’s hydraulic systems. The flight departed San Jose at 15:36 UTC. The pilots declared Mayday shortly after takeoff and entered a hold to work the relevant checklists. The aircraft touched down 48 minutes after take off at 16:24 UTC.
