The busiest airport in 2022 was Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL/KATL) with 423,193 departures. This was an increase of 21,605 from 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic impacted global travel.
The busiest airport outside of the United States is Istanbul (IST/LFTM). So far in 2023 it has recorded 197,086 departures. It also held this position in 2022.
Whilst not included in our top 10 list, the busiest airport in Europe so far this year is London Heathrow (LHR/EGLL) with 193,961 departures.
