AvTalk Episode 317: The (Q1) results are in

On this week’s episode of AvTalk, it’s hard numbers, euphemistic language, and a bit of planes on fire.

If all of the first quarter earnings reports could be summed up in a single headline, it would be: “Seeking stability in a fluid age of dynamically uncertain softening.” We review Q1 financials from Boeing, Southwest, and others to see how the aerospace industry’s largest players fared at the beginning of the year and what they think the rest of the year has in store.

The FAA announces a fast-tracking of the new NOTAM system, it is now supposed to be ready for operational use by September. A Delta A330 engine catches fire in Orlando and the evacuation raises some questions about slide deployment. And one undisclosed podcast listener has a bit of fun with a new domain name: meet UndisclosedAirlines.com.

  1. I’m unsure if I heard you correctly regarding 757’s flying to Europe during day time. UA144 Newark – Porto flies daily landing at 9h45, taking off as UA145 at 12h35.

OPO is some 100km from me but one day when I can and around I’ll grab a photo. Hopefuly landing from right direction!

Thanks from Heritage listener from Podcast 1. Keep up good work. Whilst at it can I leave a suggestion:

More interviews from those in the trade, interestingly cabin crew rarely mentioned if at all, as well as ground crew. Be nice to see those mentioned more often.

I also like to hear the ins and outs, for example how an aircraft is maintained during night hours etc and work & logistics involved.

Whilst reading this have a small annecdote from two weeks ago you may enjoy or not hearing. Upon boarding Ryanair in OPO to BUD. Doors about to close and very strong avaiation fuel scent. Many comes up saying pax must disembark due to fuel leak. Sitting on 3A I look over and nice huge pile of fuel under the wing. Crew told pax to stay put until further instructions. Fireman arrive and hosing area down with foam. Getting rather tense. Crew warned us mechanics were trying to fix the issue, we had updates every 20min…. for 4 hours. ( I rather not have seen the apprentice (as to vest ID) walking around with with rubber mallet)!
Knowing how in aviation safety is very rigorous including Ryanair I was somewhat comforted but don’t think many of my fellow pax were. We took off 4hr delay and had another 4 hours on plane so a record 8hrs on 737-800. Better than a cancelation, hardly anyone takes insurance out for this.

Once again, thanks for great work.

    Chris

    1. Hi Christopher, thanks for the comment. The discussion of the 757 was to illustrate that they’re quickly going out of passenger service with European airlines. And we hope to have more interviews with industry insiders in upcoming episodes. Glad your flight worked out in the end. Thanks for listening to AvTalk!

  2. The undisclosed airlines link is a link to the blog page of flightradar24. Please fix that. Thank you!

  3. I think I know the three airports that can handle 3 parallel departures.
    Bejing – (PEK)
    Istanbul – (IST)
    Salt Lake City – (SLC)

Let me know if these are the right ones! I would love to know what the “little something” could be!
