On this episode of AvTalk, we review what we know so far about the mid-air collision between a US Army UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter and a PSA Airlines CRJ-700 in Washington DC, what we don’t know, and some of the avenues of inquiry investigators and authorities are following. We also discuss the crash of a Learjet 55 air ambulance shortly after takeoff near Philadelphia. And finally, we sort through the preliminary report on the crash of Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243 near Aktau, Kazakhstan to begin to understand just what an incredible effort it was by the pilots to limp the E190 across the Caspian Sea.

Please don’t post to the blog until you have the transcript available. Checking back later is a pain and just doesn’t happen.
Our apologies for the inconvenience, but the audio is ready much earlier than the transcript, which we prioritize as this is a podcast. As soon as the transcript is ready we make sure to post it.
Can you make your podcasts available on pocketcasts please? It’s massively popular on Android
Hi Rob, the podcast should be available on Pocket Casts already. You can access it directly at https://pca.st/eXl6
Thank you for the update on the last three major air crashes. I’m still scratching my head about the Jeju Air flight that crashed in South Korea on approach. I’ve read that the airport itself has already made safety changes, like installing bird cameras, removing cement structures, etc., but any news about why the plane crashed?
The H60 helicopter was not on a UHF frequency. They were on the VHF frequency: 134.35 MHz. It is DCA Tower’s helicopter frequency – often controlled by the same controller as 119.1 MHz. The recording of the helicopter is available on LiveATC.net all the way down at the bottom.
