Cathay Pacific (CX/CPA) is conducting inspections of its Airbus A350 fleet after discovering issues with the aircraft’s Rolls-Royce Trent XWB turbofan engines. The announcement was made by the airline on September 2 following an incident aboard a flight to Zurich.
CX383 was a scheduled flight from Hong Kong (HKG) to Zurich (ZRH). The aircraft experienced an engine failure after takeoff, and returned to HKG after dumping fuel over the sea for around 30 minutes to the southeast of the airport. The flight was operated by B-LXI, a 5-year-old Airbus A350-1041 built in January 2019.
Cathay Pacific, one of the largest operators of the A350, announced in a statement that it had identified a ‘component failure’ on this and other aircraft in the fleet following initial inspection, and that “a number of the same engine components that need to be replaced,” Whilst inspections are nearly complete, the carrier has announced a selection of flights will be canceled as work on the affected aircraft is performed.
