The Boeing 737 MAX is a family of medium range, narrowbody airliners that include the Max 7, Max 8, Max 9 and Max 10. The Max 8 first flew on January 29th 2016, and can be powered by CFM LEAP or Pratt & Whitney GTF turbofan engines. The first Max 8 entered service with Malindo Air in May 2017.

History & development

Development of the 737 MAX programme began in 2011, with the first aircraft being rolled out in 2015. The Max 8 first flew on January 29, 2016, and the aircraft was certified by the FAA and EASA in March of that year. The Max 8 was grounded in 2019 following a series of accidents attributed to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, known as ‘MCAS’. The aircraft remained grounded for 20 months before gradually returning to service. The Max 7, 9 and 10 aircraft have since completed their first flights and have received orders from airlines.

Whilst the 737 NG family is one of the most prolific in the world, the slow return to service of the Max family has resulted in slower proliferation of the aircraft. Nearly 1,000 Max aircraft are active worldwide, with the largest operator being North American low-cost-carrier Southwest Airlines.
