Airbus A220

The Airbus A220 is a medium-range twinjet that first flew on September 16 2013. The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines. The Airbus A220 first entered service with Swiss International Airlines in 2016.

History & development

The concept for the aircraft originated in 1997 with a Bombardier-led initiative to develop a more efficient contemporary replacement for aging fleets of MD80, Fokker 100, Boeing 737 Classic and BAe-146 aircraft. It was not until 2009 that the program was pitched to airline customers, with the shorter CS100 and longer CS300 on offer. The CS100 first flew in September 2013, with the first line aircraft being delivered to launch customer Swiss International Airlines in 2016. Financial issues at Bombardier led to a partnership with Airbus, and the rebranding of the aircraft to the Airbus A220 in 2018.
