American Airlines Retiring 20 MD-80s to Roswell

On 23 August, American Airlines will retire 20 MD-82 and MD-83 aircraft to Roswell, New Mexico, one of the largest single-day aircraft retirements in airline history. American is retiring a total of 45 MD-80 series aircraft this year, leaving 52 in the fleet at the end of 2016. At one point, the American MD-80 fleet numbered 370. (more…)

Fly Along with the AeroShell Acrobatic Team

As part of the pre-show preparations for the 2016 Chicago Air and Water Show, taking place 20-21 August, we joined the AeroShell Acrobatic Team for a brief flight over Lake Michigan to see their aircraft and experience some of what they experience in over two dozen shows per year. (more…)

The Evolution of Flightradar24 Coverage

In 2009, three years after we installed the first ADS-B receiver on a roof in Stockholm, Sweden, we opened the Flightradar24 network, making it possible for anyone with an ADS-B receiver to share data. We quickly added coverage all over Europe and began to expand outward. In late 2010, we published our first global coverage snapshot. (more…)

Tracking Delta’s Systemwide Outage and Recovery

At approximately 6:30 UTC (2:30 EDT) on Monday, 8 August Delta Air Lines experienced an equipment failure that prevented flights not already in the air from departing. Flights were held for roughly four hours, but the effects are still being felt as Delta returns to normal operations. (more…)

Emirates 521 Accident in Dubai

Emirates flight 521 from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai suffered an accident while attempting a missed approach at Dubai International Airport. The aircraft impacted runway 12L and slid to a stop. All passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft safely. (more…)

New Flightradar24 Receivers Activated in July 2016

We activated over 150 new ADS-B receivers in July, which helped us for the first time track more than 5 million flights in a single month. A majority of the receivers activated this month have added new MLAT coverage, while many enlarged our coverage area. (more…)

Touring a Cathay Pacific 747-8F and EAA AirVenture 2016

We spent Saturday, 30 July at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual mega event, AirVenture. Spanning a full week, over 10,000 aircraft and 500,000 people visit the show each year. Full of new and vintage aircraft, AirVenture—or simply Oshkosh, after its location in Wisconsin—brings together aviation enthusiasts from around the world. (more…)
